View Full Version : Autographed Pre-War Cards Show & Tell

You'll have to forgive me for starting one of these every 6+ months or so, but it really is a great way to discover what previously "unknown" signed cards are out there. So please show any signed pre-war cards you've got that you either haven't shown before or just want to air out in public.

This one is one of my favorites. Larry Doyle signed a lot of cards in his time, particularly T206, but this is the only E95 signed Doyle I've ever seen.

As someone who is not a avid collector of pre-war (because of budget reasons) this is why I love coming to these boards. Since my budget does not allow me to purchase anything I can always see what is out there by looking at the cards that have been posted to the various threads. Keep up these great posts as a great many of us live through the cards that are posted!

The going thought on this one is it is in fact Chief Meyers' signature. Eventually I am going to bring it to Beckett and have JSA authenticate it...

Leon,

This might be the first instance that Meyers didn't incorporate the word "erstwhile" into a sentence!

It's fine to buy cards to resell but to say you aren't much of a collector but had to pick this one up is a tad bit misleading, imo.....You could have substituted "collector" for "reseller" and it might have been more correct. Again, nothing at all wrong with buying to resell....it's just the way it is advertised that could raise an eyebrow...

Sorry Leon, wasn't even trying to do any advertising. I'm mainly a collector, but do reselling to fund my habit. Just saw the thread and thought my card would be a nice addition for other people to enjoy. To clear the record, I am a big collector of post-war cards, but often come across pre-war stuff that I resale. I'd love to collect the pre-war stuff as well, but fear I might be biting off more financially than I can chew. Sorry if I gave the impression that I may have other motives, as I didn't even want to initially mention I was selling the card. Sorry

I could tell you weren't advertising the card on the front page. It only seemed like you were saying that because this was so cool, and you aren't really a pre war collector, you had to pick this up. Hey, I buy stuff to resell very often as many other collectors do. I don't really say that I couldn't pass up an item for resale because it was so neat though. I generally try to use what knowledge I have to try to make some money to support my habit of collecting, as you probably are. It's just semantics....No big deal on this one...and thanks for your participation on Net54baseball.com too!! kind regards

I think he was saying it was something he couldn't pass up when he bought it, but now its time for somsone else to enjoy it because it's not his area of focus for his collection.

I don't think we need to belabor the point too much more but that is actually not what he said. If you read his last comment he said he bought it for resale and does so to support his habit.....as many of us do...best regards

Leon,
Thanks for the response. Sorry you misunderstood me. By no means was I implying I bought this card on a whim or because it was "cool". I have the utmost appreciation of pre-war cards and hope to include them in the scope of my collecting soon, but explained previously why I currently do not. Anyway, I agree, no need to beat a dead horse, just wanted a chance to defend my motives. Thanks and I appreciate the service you provide with this forum, it has proven to be an excellent resource and learning tool.

David,
I am VERY jealous of that card.
Not only do I collect prewar vintage cards of Red Sox players, I also collect auto'ed vintage cards as well as the M116 Red Sox team set. Talk about a dream card....feel free to send it my way.:D

I hate those JSA stickers. I opted to peel mine off the back of a signed E91 caramel of George McBride. I much prefer the oval-shaped paper loss, but think its ridiculous that you'd have to choose one or the other.

It is the baseball historian in me, but I got goosebumps seeing that Chase card with the comment by Meyers. I'll probably lie awake tonight thinking about the circumstances under which the card and the Chief came together.

If it was mine, I don't believe I'd try to get it authenticated. If it wasn't Meyers I wouldn't want to know.

Bob, I agree. When one considers how history has marginalized Chase so much, to read how his contemporaries almost universally praised him as the best first baseman of his era, it truly is compelling. As for the writing, it is almost surely that of Meyers (or a very good forgery) based on known samples.

I totally think it is Meyers. I have a signature or two of his that resembles the lettering perfectly. I also think it would be wholly disappointing to find out it was Jason Timothy Mathews -- local softball hero.

Since the sale is over and I can't be accused of trying to run up the bids, this is one of the neatest items I saw in the Collect.Com auction.

1975

Sold for $234.

Makes you wonder about the circumstances in which it was signed.

I have seen a handful of similarly-signed Greenbergs. There were a couple of other players who also signed using their rank during wartime. Johnny Beazley comes to mind.
