Sorry no cards or photos, but I've always liked Bender, mainly to to his Phila. Am. statis, and associated with Dickinson College. Gettysburg always had Plank and Matthewson of Bucknell, but "we" (me, Dickinson '82, man, that was long ago ), always had the Chief.

Here's an interesting file from the Carlisle Indian School site:

Here's the info for Bender from Nat'l Archives' student file #1327, folder 5453, taken from a database compiled by Genevieve Bell:
Charles A. Bender
Address: White Earth Agency
Attended Carlisle 7/5/1896 - 5/14/02
Father: Albert Bender (German), Mother: living, fullblood Chippewa.
height at arrival: 5'3"
Weight: 101 lbs.
Graduated class of 1902. Captain of baseball team 1901-02.
Also: expelled for "treachery to baseball team"
Entered school at grade 4. Attended Dickinson Prep School in Carlisle. [I believe that was known as "conway hall"].
Married: Marie (German-American)
Owned a house in Philadelphia.

Would love to know more about -- Also: expelled for "treachery to baseball team"

Dickinson College, last year, finally recognized him with a plaque and flag pole at their baseball field.

As for his suspension from Carlisle, according to Bender, what happened was in 1902 he was sent to Dickinson prep school but remained Captain of the Carlisle Baseball Team. Carlisle had a two week break in the schedule and the Dickinson Captain asked Bender to take a trip with his team, claiming to have cleared it with Carlisle. During this trip Carlisle had a dual track meet with Dickinson and the star sprinter of Dickinson was also the baseball teams pitcher. The pitcher told the captain he was sick and couldn't make it to the baseball game and instead went to the track meet and took 1st place in two races. Carlise found out Bender was with the baseball team and he was "expelled for treachery to the baseball team".
Since no records were documented by Carlisle as to what happened no one really knows what happened but this is what Bender claimed.

From Bender's own collection, and inscribed in Bender's hand--the game ball from a 13-inning Bender victory vs. New York (Russ Ford, pitching), 25 April, 1912, at Hilltop Park:
