Appearantly in the Fall of 1901 or early 1902 a bunch of the Football Heros from Yale University's Past gathered for a game. I think they actually played the Varsity team but I dont know for sure what the event is. Anyways, the man in the back row second from the right is Pudge Heffelfinger the first Professional Football Player. I believe the guy is the middle is Walter Camp (would make sense since he was the Father of Yale Football and is holding the ball). There is no doubt that this is Yale and the year is right as this exact photo appears in the Yale University Yearbook for 1902.

Other than Pudge, anyone have any insight into what this game was or can you identify any of the other players on here?

I was going through my The Yale Football Story book, and recognized Pa Corbin the back row, and some others, and then flipped to the exact photo you have, that is identified. Also, the game is a game between football alumni and varsity to celebrate Yale's bicentennial.

Keith

That is awsome, thanks so much. Now that I see some of the names I recognize a few others like Al Sharpe who was Cornells coach during their 1915 Championship team etc.

Thanks so much guys.

Rhys, That is the neatest photo of Yale old timers...I don't know why Amos Alonso Stagg isn't in there. By then he was coaching at University of Chicago I think. The first important thing I ever bought was Stagg's personal bookends, that you can see on my site (http://sportsantiques.com/Stagg%20Bookends/close%20in%20both%20w%20dimensions.JPG) Someday I have to do a story on them...I drove my beater 65 olds over to Stockton Calif and visited Stagg's son Paul Stagg and man was that a story...it was wild....that was in 1988.

As some may know about me I'm wild for broadsides...take a look at this 14" x 11" one below for the second Cal Stanford football game in 1892...notice who's ref'n the game...Walter Camp way out in California...I'm pretty sure the Bum McClung in your photo is the Thomas Lee McClung on the poster.
