View Full Version : Instant $50 credit - Quick Net54 Sunday board game

Leon

OK......first one to answer this question correctly in this thread gets a one time, instant $50 credit on my for-sale website. I just looked and there are lots of cards for $50 or less. The rule is that you can only use it once and if the whole $50 isn't used you don't get the extra cash back. So if the card is $45 then that is it. You CAN combine cards to get to $50 or add a few dollars if one is more than $50, to get to the amount of the card. SO here ya go.....There will be a regular board game later on in the month but this is just for you Sunday morning viewers that care to think about cards....

In our beloved, but little talked about E223 set, what does G and B stand for?

Gilbert and Bacon?

According to my sources that is not the correct answer. You may try again if you like...

G & B Chewing Gum of NYC

Not sure what the G and B stand for, perhaps the B is for August Beck and the G is for Goodwins.

Best I could come up with

Leon

sorry OBC.....I do have the name written down....and it's not the mfg August and Beck, of course....c'mon guys....although I will say for as long as I have been a type collector I only just found this out recently...It's not real easy....which will give a little time for a few more folks to play..

Is the "G" General Santa Anna and the "B" Battle of the Alamo?

Long shot but after reading this, and now I know entirely too much of the history of chewing gum, I'll take a wild guess...

For the record no one has guessed even one of the names yet. I will show/tell where I found the answer when the game is done...

Is it possible that this is one of those impossibly rare bits of information that has yet to make it to the internet? Nice question Leon!

Damn. And Wolfram Alpha isn't available until tomorrow :(

How about Gossett & Bell?

Max- hey, you are in their fighting it out. I have had a few private emails with how folks came up with their guesses too. Very clever.

Matt- I have a strong feeling this information is no where in cyberspace...or at least not searchable. Ya'll need to remember that one of my collecting niches is old hobby periodicals......I have many different series put out up to 50 yrs ago....

I just added a 10 minute poll to this thread. Once those approx 10 minutes are up then a decision will be made on the rest of the contest

edited to add I am giving the poll until about 11:40am CST....the majority will win the decision and then we can resume the contest....

We have a winner for what "G & B" (E223) - stands for

Based on the poll at 11:42 the vote was 8 to 10 in favor of there not needing to be the exact spelling. We have a winner. Jamie Hull guessed:

Greene & Blackwell

and the answer, according to the ACC, 1960 (last) update, page 107, is:

Green & Blackwell of N.Y.

Jamie - Congratulations and we can communicate through email for your winnings.

Thanks to all who played. Believe it or not it's not real easy to "stump the members" with "1" question. <!-- / message -->

One question for J.Hull

Did you find the answer in the ACC or some place else? You won regardless if you want to answer this question or not. That was pretty tough just to have in your head for trivia....?

edited to respond to jcmtiger- that is why I did reference the year and page of the ACC. I found out the hard way that they aren't all exactly the same.

Hi Leon. Sorry, I was out for a few hours.

Nope, didn't look at the ACC. I did a few searches online and found a newspaper article (the first one posted here). I figured they had the right initials, were from NY, and if they'd been enterprising enough to get up an illegal lottery scheme, well, then they'd be just the type of fellows to try inserting baseball cards a few years later.

When I saw I'd won, I went back to try to find the darn article. I stumbled on another article (the second one posted here), and it has the correct spelling of their names.

Both are from March 2, 1884. No. 1 from the New York Sun. No. 2 from the New York Daily Tribune.

jimonym

Hmmm. :(

Email sent.

So from the articles it's possible G&B were not manufacturers (at least in 1884) but instead were retailers or wholesalers.

Leon

I think, as in most other early sets, the mfg of the physical card was different than the distributor.
