Though not baseball, I did win two lots of large cents which I collect.

But I do want to make a point: I left substantial ceiling bids on both lots and won them for multiple increments below my max. Given what's gone on in the past, I felt it was important to share that with the board. And it is most appreciated.

Bicem

Given what's gone on in the past, were you not at all worried making those ceiling bids Barry?

Was it a matter of just not wanting to stay up late?

I think with Barry it was definitely a matter of not wanting to stay up late. :)

Dave got it. The way I see it, unless you are willing to stay up until the bitter end you might as well leave a ceiling. And I decided I wanted to trust them, in some perverse way.

As always you are correct. It was in 2007 that REA sold a strong SGC 60 for for 7K, not sure if that is with the juice or not.

If I didn't own it, you would have had to pay more. Great card, you will be very happy with it! The one in Legendary had a few scratches and what looks to be water damage, but to save $3,000.00, I think I like yours more. Congrats!!

Won one lot, a $200 group of "Baseball Leader" pins. The 20% juice is high plus I get hit with another $21.60 in IL sales tax, and they want $24.81 to ship 8 dime sized pins about 30 minutes North of their offices. This should cost $6 at the most. If they refuse to reduce shipping, I will end up paying $286.41 for an item won with a $200 bid. I realize it is not much money, but paying an extra 43% seems a little much. Will have to re-think bidding with them.

rhettyeakley
05-01-2009, 02:25 PM
Well, they are charging me $37.66 to ship 2 pins about the size of a silver dollar each. The final bid was only $350, so it seems a little silly. Imagine trying to charge that on ebay (or anywhere else). I wonder if they still have some leftover tape?

barrysloate
05-01-2009, 02:45 PM

In another, recent auction, (not Mastro or their spawn) I won a lot for just under $30,000. The juice added 10%. I was charged $30 for shipping and the package arrived by Fedex, one day after my check hit his hands.

And some people don't like that auctioneer. Go figure.

I was taken aback at $61.50 in shipping costs for a single baseball card! One card!!!

Do you mind saying what the selling price was? I can see a card that sells for $15,000 costing more to ship than one that sold for $1,000. Don't get me wrong, Mastro/Lengendary long has been known for absurd shipping charges, I'm just not sure it's fair to take into account only what's being shipped and not the package's value, too.

Rob -- what I purchased was nowhere near that range...

And I actually somewhat disagree with your assessment.

With Registered Mail, you can insure for $15,000 for $30.10. For $5,000 under $20-

Rob, the shipping charge is so high I could have bought a plane ticket for the two cards and gotten them a free meal and drinks on the flight to NYC.

Rob D.
05-01-2009, 07:35 PM
Well, I know that Mastro/Legendary says on its invoice that it doesn't ship using the USPS, so the registered-mail option is a moot point. Whether the decision to not use the USPS is a wise one is another discussion. I don't know enough about the costs of shipping via UPS and FedEx to comment on how the value of a parcel affects the shipping charge.

And to be clear, I'm not defending Mastro's/Lengendary's shipping charges. I'll leave that for others to do. I'm just saying that it seems logical that the value of a package should be figured into the equation.

I think the following is a pretty fair comparison regarding shipping and handling charges.

Group of eight oversized, graded cards -- total bid amount $1,700. Legendary shipping charge: $35.04

Group of seven oversized, graded cards, plus six standard-sized graded cards -- total bid amount $11,800. REA shipping charge: $25

The distance from Legendary's offices to my house is about 200 miles less than from REA's offices to my house.

I already paid my invoice-- the day it was emailed to me.

Super service Legendary. Super.

Another steller customer service move. I didn't win anything with them this go around. I know with REA this year I had a bill for $2150 and the shipping was a flat $20, shipping was also a flat $20 last year when my bill was about $3k.

Matt
05-05-2009, 12:51 PM
Dave - it's not fair to compare. REA only takes a 17.5% BP so they can absorb more of the shipping cost. Mastro takes 20% so they have less...oh wait...

For what it's worth, my total from Legendary was over $31,000 with a shipping cost of $35. Somehow I suspect that they are eating some costs there, agreed?

When I initially received the invoice which listed the shipping total of $198 I was surprised because, well, that seemed high. But insuring a package of that value does obviously cost more than $35. While perhaps one can always find a shipper to do things cheaper I have no doubt that the $198 figure was at least in the ballpark considering the insurance costs.

asphaltman
05-05-2009, 01:07 PM
Jeff-

Yes, I'd say they are eating some costs on your shipping at this point. But that still isn't a great reason to make others pay stupid amounts either. What is more bothersome is that they've obviously changed the shipping for some after receiving emails but haven't even bothered responding to others.

Bicem

Just a follow up. Nobody ever replied to my inquiry about the excessive shipping but I was notified by them today telling me they shipped out my card. Is it just me, or does it seem kinda weird that winning bidders have to negotiate their shipping charges? Are the people who dutifully pay their bills without questioning things subsidizing those who complain? This also has to be a pain for Doug to go through. There must be a better system for handling these charges.

sox1903wschamp

I think the system should have been to be "reasonable" to begin with and there would not have been issues. We all expect higher shipping charges from the Major houses compared to Ebay and others but not charges up in the stratosphere.

I'm in all honesty quite pissed that a postal money order was in the mail the day my invoice arrived....included was my $40 shipping charge. They did a great job turning the lot around and getting it to my door, but I resent the fact that I was penalized since it turns out you could have negotiated shipping.

Sometimes it pays to be the squeaky wheel. Is there a better way, probably. Is the shipping department a profit center, I don't know.

I won one, standard-sized card for $720.00. Shipping was $32.75. I emailed and asked if that could be reviewed. No response. Bit the bullet and sent certified funds on 5/7. Have not received card. Emailed status request last Thursday. A couple hours later I get a response that my item has been shipped on 5/21. No card yet--supposedly tomorrow.

I'm not at all thrilled by this, but won the card at below my top bid, so I have no real bitterness. I do believe the shipping is almost arbitrary, that it is a profit center, and that preferential treatment is afforded.
