Posted By: larry
with 99.999% certainty there are 192 lineups possible
campaneris, gibson macmillan, b.robinson and jerry grote DO NOT EXIST as captains
thanks to mastro auctions and ebay recently i have seen so many triple panels
that I am now certain that every lineup is unique to its own panel...You cannot have a triple panel with a lineup that is the same on any other triple panel...therefore either 64 65 or 66 panels exist which makes 192 195 or 198 lineups...since i now know 192 lineups..the only real possible way for any of these players to exist would be if 3 of them are all on the same panel...thats the .001% uncertainty i guess

Posted By: Dave Hornish
I thought Gibson had been confirmed. I find it hard to believe he and B. Robby would not be Captains. There could be one other card then beside those two. My gut instinct would be 66 panels total (Topps loves divisble by 11) for 198 lineups ("almost 200"). I am assuming each Captain has three lineups, right?

I think Grote is just a typo for Groat (an error I perpetuated). Can't say for certain re Campy and MacMillan. Crazy set.

Posted By: Randy Trierweiler
Larry, nice research. I agree that the Gibson does not exist. I've been looking for 15-16 years. I've seen a few hundred punchouts during that time, never saw a Gibson nor could confirm one. I've searched several Nationals, dozens of major shows, and everything on the internet. I don't belive it exists.

Dave, I mentioned on an earlier thread that a dealer at the National (Steve Werley) told me he thought the Gibson did exist. He wasn't definitive. That may be what you are referring to. Randy

Posted By: larry
16 captains 1 lineup 16
40 captains 2 lineups 80
24 captains 3 lineups 72
6 captains 4 lineups 24
total 192
if any of the 5 missing exist it would have to be with 2 other missing captains
I cannot believe after seeing over 1000 punchouts, that there are any lineups i havent seen of the 86 captains i know exist
Until someone proves to me that 1 of those guys exists...I claim that 192 is a complete master set
Posted By: larry
even more convincing
in listing the 192 i forgot the 3 lineups ive seen but dont have
so there are 195 known lineups
since topps says there are almost 200...obviously it is even more unlikely the 5 missing players exist
there are 14 captains 1 lineup
41 captains 2 lineups
25 captains 3 lineups
6 captains 4 lineups
thats 86 captains and 195 lineups

Posted By: Shane Hardie
If the Gibson doesn't exist, that is a big relief. I collect Cardinals team sets. I am now working on rare test issues and misc from Topps. The 67 Punchouts Gibson is on my list. Are you saying that I can take it off now?

Also, can anybody confirm who the Cardinals are in this set? I have Brock, Cepeda, Flood, and McCarver on my list.
